Alethea Kenney Workshops

Minerals 101: Why Sheep Need Certain Minerals
Sunday, June 12th 9 am – 10:15 am
Cost: $10

In this class you will learn what minerals are necessary for a healthy sheep or goat and what each mineral does in the body. Possible deficiency and toxicity symptoms for those minerals will be discussed. While you may never choose to mix your own minerals, you should leave this class with an understanding of why mineral mixes contain the ingredients that they do and what ratios of some minerals would be correct for sheep and goats. Class includes handouts.

Herbs for the Farm: Medicinal Plants for Sheep and their Shepherds
Sunday, June 12th 10:15 am – 11:30 am
Cost: $10

This class is an introduction to using herbs for simple first aid and common illnesses in sheep or goats and their human caretakers. You will learn how to use some common herbs available on most farms or easily found in health stores or online and what their medicinal action is. Handouts will include explanations and a materia medica – a list of the herbs covered and their actions. By the time you leave, hopefully you will be inspired to look at your fields and fencerows in a different light and notice the medicine chest at your feet.

Alethea Kenney has her B.S. in Wildlife Science, her Doctorate in Naturopathy and a certification in Western Herbalism. She works as a Traditional Naturopath specializing in herbs, essential oils and homeopathy. She has spent many years working with animals in a veterinary setting and on the farm. She now runs Reedbird Farm, a chemical-free Icelandic sheep and fiber farm in northern Minnesota, and Boreal Balance, LLC, a natural health consulting business for humans and their animal companions. She studies, writes and teaches about natural dyes for fiber, and herbs and minerals as they relate to health in humans, companion animals and livestock, particularly sheep. For relaxation, she spins, knits, weaves and gardens. She can most often be found in the barn where she prodigiously studies more ergonomic ways to improve waste management.
