Joan Contraman Workshops

Spinning Self Striping Socks
Friday, June 10th 9 am – 4 pm
Cost: Cancelled
Cost includes all materials except your favorite spinning wheel.

This workshop has been cancelled.

Instructor will show how to divide the kits to make matching stripped socks and how to make tonal choices. The class will do some spinning of both the striped main color and the ply to make sure everyone is comfortable with each spinning weight.

Students receive a kit in their colorway choice. Students also receive three containers to hold their stripes in order, and to hold the plying yarn plus a wood gauge.

Experience Level: Intermediate. Students must be able to spin to a gauge, as one single is spun medium to thick and one is spun thread fine.

A Weaver’s Garden – Variations of A Thousand Flowers
Saturday, June 10th 9 am – 4 pm
Cost: $65
Cost includes all materials except the student’s own floor loom which needs to come to class already warped.

This is a one day weaving class. Students will treadle various weave structures on “A Thousand Flowers” the beginning of overshot. This class encourages experimentation of different draft structures on one draft treading. Students will do a sampling of weaving different patterns in class and complete the rest of the patterns at home. There will be a discussion of different pattern books available, doing your own experimentation, and weaving tips and tricks.

Note: Students will be sent a weaving draft at least three weeks prior to class and looms are to be warped prior to class.

Experience Level: Intermediate Beginner. Students need to know how to dress a loom and read a pattern. Students will receive a notebook with more than 30 different drafts.

Knitting a Scarf from Silk Caps or Silk Hankies
Sunday, June 12th 1 pm – 4 pm
Cost: $35
Cost includes all materials except needles.

If you can do a knit stitch, you can make this scarf! Students will learn how to pull out a continuous “yarn” from a silk cap or hankie. Joan will also teach about the different kinds of silk.

Please Bring: Size 9 straight or circular needles.

Joan Contraman has worked in fiber arts since 1970 and holds a BA in fine arts from The University of California at Davis. Joan has been raising her own sheep and running her spinning fiber business, Crosspatch Creations, since moving to Montana in 1996. Her fiber is sold nationwide in 20 stores and at spinning and weaving shows, such as The Black Sheep Gathering, Rhinebeck and The Maryland Wool Show and is now carried by a store in Australia. She has been teaching spinning, weaving and dyeing classes since 1985.
