Dyeing a Handspinners Garden
Friday, June 12th, 1pm – 4pm or
Saturday, June 13th, 1pm – 4pm (FULL)
Cost: $60 (includes all fiber and dyes)
Participants will be presented with color theory and knowledge of how dye works. Space dyeing both top and roving in the microwave using a technique Joan has developed to make colors not run together during setting, you will be exploring all those wonderful cellulose (plant) fibers that are now available to the modern day spinner: flax, ramie, cotton, bamboo, tencil, viscose and others. Each student will end with a good amount of these fibers to spin up after the class.
Students bring: Notebook, pens, scissors, stapler and 8 plastic Ziplock storage bags.
Fiber Blending and Variegated Variations
Sunday, June 14th, 1pm – 4pm
Cost: $55 (includes all fibers and combs)
Requirements: Students must be able to spin a continuous yarn.
Participants will be presented with color theory and how colors work together when blended. Colors that make colors “pop” and those that make color recede. How to combine shiny and matte fibers together and how to produce texture in your yarns. Participants will learn how to blend with handcards, wool combs and drum carders to produce lovely handspun yarns. By the end of class, students will be creating their own beautiful blends with confidence.
Students bring: Spinning wheel, spinning oil, notebook, pens, scissors, stapler.
Joan W. Contramen has worked with fiber for 30+ years and brings this love and experience to her wholesale fiber business. Crosspatch Creations manufactures custom, hand-dyed and hand-blended spinning batts. Joan has a degree in Fine Art, teaches dye techniques to quilters & fiber artists, is past president of the Missoula Weavers Guild, is a quilter and a T.A.R.T.
