Produce a Champion Fleece
Sunday 9am-12pm $40

How can I get my sheep to produce a champion fleece? This class is designed for both the inexperienced and the experienced shepherd. It will cover the various ways the shepherd can improve the quality and quantity of wool their sheep produce.

Students will learn the role that genetics and nutrition play in the production of a champion fleece. The ability to inherit and repeat wool traits will be discussed as well as how these traits can be used to improve fleece quality and quantity. Selecting a show fleece on the live animal and tips on how to prepare your fleece for show will also be covered.

Martin R. Dally is a fourth generation sheepman. After graduating from Cal Poly with a degree in Animal Science, Martin moved to Wyoming to work on a large scale sheep ranch. He became a manager at YO Ranch, a 10,000 ewes operation in Eastern WY.

Later he became the superintendent of the University Of Wyoming’s Archer Experimental Station. In 1971 he left Wyoming and moved to Oregon where he attended graduate school at Oregon State University. After completing his graduate studies, he became manager of the Polypay sheep breed development program for Nicholas Sheep Farms in Sonoma.

In 1981 Martin joined the Department of Animal Science, University of California where he was in charge of all sheep experiments conducted at the Hopland Research and Extension Center for 21 years. He was involved in sheep behavior, animal breeding, reproduction and range management experiments. In 1986 Martin established Super Sire Limited a company that imports and exports sheep and goat semen from throughout the World. His company also provides laparoscopic artificial insemination and semen collection services. Martin is presently the president of the North American Gotland Sheep Breeders Assn. and a past president of North American Wensleydale Assn.
