Drop Spindle for Real Beginners
Saturday, June 11th 9 am – Noon
Cost: $40
The objective of this course is to give the beginning student the basic fundamentals of handspinning wool using a bottom whorl drop spindle. After completion of the course the student will know the different types of spindles and their use, plus how to tie a leader to the spindle, draft the fiber for easy spinning, join fiber’s ends together, spin different sizes of yarn, make a 2-ply yarn, set in the twist, make a skein, and more.
Materials Needed:
- A bottom-whorl drop spindle (Ashford student spindle or any bottom whorl spindle)
- A 12 inch length of yarn for the leader
- Scissors
- Niddy noddy (optional)
- Fiber is included and spindle can be bought for $10, if needed.
Spinning Multicolored Yarn
Saturday, June 11th 1 pm – 4 pm
Cost: $50
Learn handcarding and spinning techniques used to create beautiful multi-colored yarn from dyed or natural colored fibers. The course will cover several elements of yarn design including texture, color harmony, carding, blending, and plying techniques.
Materials Needed:
- Spinning wheel with lazy kate, minimum 3 bobbins or a drop spindle
- 1 pair of hand carders
- Scissors
- Niddy noddy (optional)
- Fiber is included
Tulasi Zimmer is an award-winning handspinner and the owner/creator of The Joy of Handspinning. She is a native of Columbus, Ohio and now resides in Helena, Montana. Tulasi holds a Master of Fine Arts degree (M.F.A.) from Miami University of Ohio and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (B.F.A.) from The Ohio State University.
Tulasi has worked professionally as a graphic artist, web designer, multimedia producer, computer animator, architectural decorator, and publisher. Her experience as a fiber artist includes Navajo tapestry weaving, crocheting, knitting, and handspinning. She gives handspinning classes in her studio and within the community.
